Interpreting

Interpreting sworn / certified or regular,Dublin

Interpreting (sworn / certified or regular) i.e. oral translation may be divided into several groups:

Consecutive interpreting

- rendering of meaning in the target language follows after a short fragment is presented by a speaker.

An interpreter notes down the speech through a special code of signs elaborated by himself / herself and then based on the note he / she recreates in the target language the meaning of the speech (proper names, figures and other data must be rendered very accurately).

This type of interpreting is most frequently used in high level meetings, confidential talks, business meetings, press conferences and trainings.

Liaison interpreting

Interpreting sworn / certified or regular Dublin

(sentence by sentence) – is performed for one or a small group of listeners.

This kind of interpreting is most frequently done without specialist equipment, even notes are not needed as the interpreter renders very short fragments of the speech, often sentence by sentence (unlike in consecutive interpreting where longer fragments are interpreted). In “liaison” interpretation rendering details is very important that is why it is used in situations where details are of crucial importance. (Court’s examinations of witnesses or expert witnesses, hospital visits, techical presentations).

Whispering or “chuchotage”

- is a kind of interpreting where the interpreter whispers a simultaneous interpretation to the ear of the listener.

He / she may also interpret for a small target-language audience.

Simultaneous interpretation

- also called cabin interpreting is performed in real time during the speech.

The speaker does not interrupt their speech to let the interpreter render the meaning in the targer language. The interpreter who most often sits in a cabin or (a booth) listens to the speaker by earphones and renders the message in the target-language as quickly as he or she can formulate it from the source language. This type of interpreting is most frequent in big international conferences http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/scic/what-is-conference-interpreting. It is considered as the most difficult one because apart from highly developed linguistic skills in both, target and source, languages and the knowledge of the subject matter the interpreter should possess well developed concentration skills while being able to divide their attention at the same time.

Sight interpretation

– is an interpretation of a written text, performed usually without any previous preparation and context knowledge. It is used most commonly in courts, at the notary’ public’s and in different official institutions. In this type of interpreting the interpreter needs to focus on the whole sentence in order to render the contents in the target language fluently.
